Integris Health's Risk Management team worked closely with ERGOtug, a division of NuStar, Inc. (www.ergotug.com), a Minnesota based vendor, that provides ergonomic tugs and transporters. The use of the vendor's products eliminated the pulling and pushing aspects and allowed employees to accomplish more work in a shorter time period. The linen carts are now moved with little effort. Consequently, workers require less time off due to injuries and have lower workers' compensation rates. |

It was decided to purchase an ERGO-tug Medical Mover for each patient care unit to move patients in bed if the beds proved to be too heavy or if injuries occurred. The ERGO-tug attaches and detaches in seconds and can safely move up to 1,800 pounds. |

Ergonomics is a key topic of discussion throughout industry today. With multiple changes announced, anticipated, and then withdrawn the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), at this point, requires employers to continue reporting ergonomics-related injuries just like they do other injuries. Initially it was thought that ergonomic-related injuries would be reported in a separate column (on the OSHA form 300 log) but not at this time. |
